Scenario:

A PV power station in the Czech Republic faced increasing challenges in managing excess solar energy during midday peak production periods.

As one of the major renewable energy projects developed by SOLAR GLOBAL a.s., the plant has a total installed capacity of 6 MW and is divided into six separate parts. This project covers three sites within one of the six sections of the plant.

Without energy storage integration, surplus solar electricity generated during peak periods was directly exported to the grid, creating increasing pressure on real-time grid balancing and overall system stability under conditions of rising renewable penetration.

As renewable energy penetration continued to increase, maintaining power balance and supporting grid frequency stability became increasingly important. This required a more flexible and responsive energy management approach that could better align generation with demand.

Key objectives, therefore, extended beyond improving solar self-consumption to include enhancing grid stability, supporting real-time power balancing, mitigating congestion risks, and ensuring reliable long-term operation of the PV system within a dynamic grid environment.

To address these requirements, POWEROAD FLEX 215 Air Cooling Outdoor Cabinet ESS units were deployed and integrated with SOLAR GLOBAL a.s.’s EMS platform, enabling intelligent energy dispatch and fast-response power control to support grid-responsive operation and improved system-level balancing capability.

Application:

Intelligent Energy Storage Management and Frequency Regulation

Through the integration of POWEROAD ESS units with SOLAR GLOBAL a.s. ‘s EMS, the project enables real-time coordination of charging and discharging strategies based on PV generation, site demand, and grid operating conditions.

PV Curtailment Reduction and Renewable Energy Utilization

Excess solar electricity generated during peak production periods is stored in the ESS instead of being directly exported to the grid or curtailed. The stored energy can then be redistributed during periods of higher demand or lower PV output, increasing local renewable energy absorption and improving overall solar energy utilization efficiency.

Peak Shaving and Grid Congestion Mitigation

By reducing excessive power export during peak solar generation periods, the application helps alleviate grid congestion risks and supports more balanced operation between distributed PV generation and grid infrastructure.

Enhanced Operational Flexibility and Energy Stability

Through intelligent energy dispatch and coordinated multi-site energy management, the project improves operational flexibility, strengthens energy independence, and supports more stable and sustainable renewable energy operation.
