Industrial energy transition is no longer only about installing renewable generation capacity — it is increasingly about how to use that energy more efficiently, intelligently, and sustainably.

In Belgium, MR Solar deployed 16 units of POWEROAD battery energy storage systems for Karel Sterckx NV, supporting the development of a more resilient and future-ready industrial energy infrastructure. The project has also been selected as POWEROAD’s Projects Excellence | Sustainability Excellence.

Scenario:

A large-scale solar project as the start of a collaboration

MR Solar was entrusted with the complete energy project, from design to implementation. During the initial phase, MR Solar successfully installed 10,000 solar panels with an inverter.

The success of this first project prompted Karel Sterckx and his team to reach out to MR Solar once again, as they looked to take the next step in their green energy transition.

Karel Sterckx NV is a well-established player in the industrial sector, processing organic and agricultural residual materials into high-quality compost and cover materials for mushroom cultivation.

Sterckx has built a strong reputation for quality, innovation, and craftsmanship. From their site in West Flanders, they have been pursuing sustainable growth for decades.

In 2020, they wanted to extend this ambition to their energy management for the first time. Their ultimate goal is to make a major step in their green energy transition, maximizing the efficiency of self-produced energy and building a future-proof infrastructure.

Smart storage for maximum autonomy

By the end of 2024, Karel Sterckx requested an expansion of the installation.

To meet the client’s needs, MR Solar, together with its long-term strategic partner POWEROAD, successfully executed the installation of a 16-unit POWEROAD BESS with a total capacity of 1600 kW / 3728 kWh, ensuring seamless integration and reliable operation on site.

Application:

The project aimed to achieve three primary objectives:

  • Optimizing energy trading by strategically responding to price fluctuations
  • Implementing peak shaving to smooth consumption peaks and reduce grid costs
  • Maximizing self-consumption by increasing the use of self-generated energy, thereby reducing reliance on the grid.

The successful execution of these goals led to a more efficient energy system, reduced costs, and supported the client’s transition towards green energy.
