Petroleum industry ESS Project: Empowering Remote Oilfields in -40℃ Extreme Cold Environment

Background:

Located in the northwestern margin of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang Oilfield, formerly known as Karamay Oilfield, was China’s first large oilfield discovered in 1955. Over the past 70 years, the oilfield has produced more than 440 million tons of crude oil and 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas, maintaining an annual crude output of over 10 million tons for 22 consecutive years. In addition to its strong capabilities in oil and gas exploration, production, and refining, Xinjiang Oilfield plays a crucial role in ensuring national energy security and economic development.

Challenges:

Nearly 300 kilometers from Karamay City, the remote oilfield lies amid vast desert landscapes, with no trees, water sources, or villages in sight. The challenges of supplying power to the area include the high cost of extending the power grid and the inefficiency of unused equipment after drilling ceases. As a result, most drilling sites rely on diesel generators, which lead to high operating costs, significant carbon emissions, and intensive labor requirements, ultimately impacting production efficiency. This outdated energy supply model urgently requires transformation and upgrades.

Solution:

POWEROAD provided an integrated energy solution combining solar power generation, energy storage systems, and diesel generators to form an independent microgrid system. Operating without external grid support, the system supplies power to 36 remote drilling sites, solving the challenge of electricity access in off-grid areas.

The project utilizes POWEROAD FLEX 233 All-in-one Liquid Cooling Outdoor Cabinet ESS, with deployment tailored to the power needs of each site. The total system capacity is 18.43MWh, with high-standard protective features that adapt to harsh conditions, ensuring a continuous, reliable supply of green energy for drilling operations.

Project Value:

POWEROAD’s innovative energy solution leverages multi-energy integration and intelligent controls to optimize energy use, maximize efficiency, and reduce reliance on diesel generators. This not only cuts operational costs but also enhances the stability and reliability of the oilfield’s energy supply, ensuring uninterrupted production in Xinjiang Oilfield.

As drilling operations extend to deeper and more challenging locations, the integration of green energy storage systems with oilfield development accelerates the transition to low-carbon energy in oilfield operations. This project plays a pivotal role in creating a high-quality development model for petrochemical industries along the Belt and Road Initiative, injecting new momentum into Xinjiang’s sustainable energy future while helping the oilfield achieve even greater milestones in the energy sector.
