● Background:
In response to growing demand for sustainable practices and future zero-emission regulations, a leading logistics company in the Netherlands set out to reduce its environmental footprint by electrifying its truck fleet. A key step in this transition was developing a solar-powered charging system that would allow the company to produce and store its own energy for EV charging, further aligning with the company’s sustainability goals.
To meet these goals, the company installed a substantial solar setup consisting of 2,800 solar panels, generating a significant amount of green energy. However, to make this renewable energy source effective, they needed a way to store the generated energy and address grid limitations effectively.
● Challenge:
With the company’s location facing limitations in grid capacity, there was a need for a solution that would allow reliable EV charging without overloading the grid. Additionally, the company aimed to maintain a high level of self-sufficiency, reduce peak demand charges, and keep energy costs low, ensuring that the investment was economically viable while achieving environmental objectives.
● Solution:
To meet the company’s goals, POWEROAD provided the FLEX 215 Air Cooling Outdoor Cabinet ESS, with a 1 MW / 4.3 MWh capacity. This ESS setup not only stores surplus solar power generated during peak sunlight hours but also manages power distribution to charge the electric trucks efficiently, even during high-demand periods. By combining solar power with large-scale storage, the logistics company can maintain continuous, cost-effective charging for its fleet while minimizing grid dependency and peak demand charges.
POWEROAD FLEX 215 is also optimized for demand response, enabling the company to adjust its energy use in response to grid signals, lowering operational costs further. This approach balances sustainability and operational needs, ensuring smooth, uninterrupted fleet charging while contributing to the company’s overall carbon reduction targets.
Since deploying the POWEROAD FLEX 215 ESS, the logistics company has realized several significant benefits:
- Enhanced Self-Sufficiency: The company now generates and stores its own renewable energy for EV charging, minimizing its reliance on the grid.
- Reduced Demand Charges: Through demand response, the company avoids high demand charges, cutting operational costs.
- Sustainable Charging: The ESS supports continuous green energy charging, preparing the company for future zero-emission regulations.
This project highlights how POWEROAD’s energy storage solutions can empower the logistics sector to transition to green energy, meeting today’s sustainability demands while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges.
